Harley Maintenance
By Bryan Infusino (October 2000)

I decided to do an article on Servicing a Harley since I get so many questions on it. First off, this is my opinion, not the factories, so don't get confused. I'll start from the front and go to the back of the bike. The first is the forks. Oil should be changed every 10,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first. When you change it at 10,000 miles on a two year old bike, it doesn't look to dirty, but any longer and it starts to look like mud. Harley Davidson type E fork oil or any good 15W fork oil will work on late model bikes. Check the specs on other models. The next item is the wheel bearings. I recommend that they be checked and packed at 10,000 miles or any time the wheel is off. Also, replace the seals at this time. Is see a lot of bearings full of rust or water because of lack of maintenance. As of 2000, all bearings are sealed so this will not be required on new bikes. While the rim is off, check the breaks to make sure they are not worn or leaking. Next is the engine oil. Change the oil every 2500 to 3000 miles depending on your riding style. Use a good filter and oil. Most good oils and filters will meet Harley standards. Next will be the primary case oil Drain the case and adjust the chain and clutch. Do this every other oil change if you ride hard. It is cheap insurance. After the primary is the transmission. Change the fluid and check the plug for excessive metal. This should e done every 5000 miles or once a year. At the rear wheel bearings, repeat the front service and check the brakes and the belt adjustment. The only major things to worry about will be the air filter, throttle cables and battery. Check the air filter every oil change as well as the throttle cables. The battery should get service once a year. |
