Riding Season is Here
By Bryan Infusino (April 2001)

April is here and riding season is finally here. Hopefully you have your bike all ready to enjoy the four or five good days to ride. Most riders don't like to do big jobs during the season because of our short riding season. But, there are a lot of quick projects that can be done. The most common summer project seems to be an exhaust change. When you get a new Harley, the first thing to do is the exhaust. This is because when you bought that $18,000 bike, they didn't tell you it would sound like a lawn mower without the $200 mufflers. Exhaust is one of he many areas that the aftermarket blows the factory away, not only because of sound, but also in quality. There are so many good exhaust systems out there for Harley's that you should find one to fit your needs. Harley Exhausts can be broken down into two basic groups. First is the two into two. This means the two cylinders of the engine move the exhaust out of two exhaust pipes. This is what most bikes come stock with, although they do have a crossover tube. The two into two works well and will give a good sound when using a good muffler. The other type of exhaust is a two into one. This system will take the exhaust gasses from two cylinders and blow it out one muffler. This system will give a bike more low end and torque. If you plan to buy either type of exhaust, make sure you find what you like. There are so many people selling exhaust systems, you should find one that fits your needs. The most common problem is blueing. This is what happens when extreme heat turns the chrome blue. So, I recommend you tune your bike properly and buy an exhaust system that comes with heat shields. Stop in and I'll help you find the best exhaust for you and your bike. |
